Thoughts on building the environment for innovation:
* Don't Vote
Voting does not usually encourage ideas which are not mainstream or attractive enough.
Voting is reasonable only for 2 cases, one is that the voters have to take responsibilities or actions on the result, the other is when facing mass infomation.
Innovation is a baby of the innovator(s) instead of all members especially during its growth stage. Other's votes does not mean they need to take any action or responsibility.
People have so many ways to express their interests on a specific idea, being involved in the innovation is one of them.
The point is encouraging all valuable tries rather than unintentionally emphasizing the improper value preference through early voting.
* Don't Define Innovation
We don't need to know clearly about the differences among innovation, applying existing techniques or a simple suggestion. We are longing for all of them and they benefit from exactly the same envirenment.
The point is that we encourage all valuable thoughts and actions no matter which category they belongs to or how significant they are.
* Don't Do ROI Analysis
One purpose of innovation is improving productivity, but that does not mean we need ROI analysis at the early stage. Actions, encouragement and passion are the most important things at this time instead of an all-sided understanding of the idea.
The innovator will learn more during the process even if his idea is proved to be a WASTE eventually.
* In-Team Innovation Facilitater
It's essential to keep the innovation facilitating works/roles very visible and reachable all the time. It could be much better if we have an innovation facilitater for each team, he could do what he think is helpful duing stand up meeting, retrospective meeting or even in pairing and
informal conversations.
* Broad publishing channels
We always has good ideas to make things visible to all, try them for innovations.
* Slack in Work
Innovation need time, keep the utilization rate of human resources not more than 80%.
* Vision & Culture
Build the long time vision which heavily depends on innovation, attract guys who have the same attitude and cultivate the behavior habit of the staff.
